ICARO birding experience
P.N. del Cadí-Moixeró: Coll de la Creueta
35

We invite you to join us on a fantastic high-mountain birdwatching excursion, especially designed for those who love large birds of prey and the characteristic birds of alpine meadows, in one of the most spectacular areas of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park: Coll de la Creueta.

We will enjoy a pleasant and relatively easy walk, with no significant changes in elevation, allowing us to discover the remarkable bird diversity of this Pyrenean landscape. Among the most interesting species we may encounter are Grey Partridge, Bearded Vulture, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Ring Ouzel, Eurasian Skylark and Rock Bunting, among many others. Along the way, we will also have the opportunity to observe some of the most iconic mammals of the Pyrenees, including Alpine Marmot, Pyrenean Chamois and Red Deer.

All in all, this is a wonderful opportunity to spend a morning surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, at an altitude of almost 2,000 metres, while enjoying some of the most characteristic birds of the high Pyrenees.

To round off the day, on our way back, we will make a final stop at Graugés Lake, near Berga, where we will explore a completely different but equally interesting bird community. Here, we may have the chance to observe species such as Hawfinch, Eurasian Nuthatch and Mandarin Duck, among many others.

A fantastic day out to enjoy nature, stunning Pyrenean landscapes and the wonderful diversity of birds found in these two very different habitats!

We will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the parking area located alongside the road to Coll de la Creueta, at the following coordinates: 42.301291, 1.993189. We will leave our vehicles here and begin our walk towards the slopes of Puigllançada.

The route follows a relatively flat and easy trail, initially passing through a small woodland area before continuing across open mountain landscapes for most of the walk. Along the way, we may spot our first Griffon Vultures and Bearded Vultures soaring overhead, along with other birds of prey characteristic of the area. We will also keep a close eye out for Alpine Marmots and Pyrenean Chamois, two of the most emblematic mammals of these mountains.

We will stop to enjoy our packed breakfast at a strategic viewpoint along a raptor flight route, where we can watch for passing birds of prey while using our spotting scopes to search for Grey Partridges and other interesting mountain birds.

After lunch, on our way back, we will make a stop near Berga to visit Graugés Lake, one of the few places in Catalonia where Mandarin Ducks can be observed with some regularity. Other interesting species we may encounter include Mute Swans, Eurasian Nuthatches and Hawfinches. We will also explore the beautiful surrounding riparian woodland, where Eurasian Otters are occasionally spotted.

We will conclude our birdwatching excursion in the late afternoon, after a wonderful day exploring two very different habitats and enjoying the remarkable wildlife of the Catalan Pyrenees.
