We invite you to join us on a fantastic full-day guided birdwatching excursion to the Serra de Boumort Natural Area, one of the most spectacular and emblematic locations in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees for observing large birds of prey.
Throughout the day, we will explore different areas of the Boumort National Game Reserve, a privileged landscape that supports one of the highest concentrations of vultures in Catalonia. It is also one of the few places where all four vulture species found in the region can be observed: Bearded Vulture, Cinereous Vulture, Griffon Vulture and Egyptian Vulture, although the latter is a migratory species and is absent during the winter months.
In addition to its extraordinary birdlife, Boumort is also home to a remarkable diversity of large herbivorous mammals, including Red Deer, Pyrenean Chamois, Fallow Deer and Roe Deer, which inhabit its forests and mountains. The presence of several vulture feeding stations makes this area one of the best places in Catalonia for watching and photographing large birds of prey, offering opportunities to capture spectacular images at relatively close range. A perfect opportunity to bring along your camera and enjoy some outstanding wildlife photography!
During our excursion, we will also explore the higher elevations of the mountain range, searching for interesting species such as Citril Finch, Red Crossbill and Peregrine Falcon. We will also venture into different forest habitats, particularly mature woodlands, in search of the fascinating Black Woodpecker, one of the most emblematic bird species of the Pyrenean forests.
An exciting day surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, magnificent birds of prey and the characteristic wildlife of the Pre-Pyrenees. An unforgettable experience for birdwatchers, nature lovers and wildlife photographers alike. Would you like to join us?
We will meet at 8:00 a.m. at Restaurant Ventureta, in the town of Ponts, located at the following coordinates: 41.915604, 1.1854210. The restaurant is situated directly opposite the main roundabout at the junction of the C-1412a and C-14 roads. There is a convenient parking area right in front of the restaurant where we can leave our vehicles.
Once everyone has arrived and we have organised our vehicles, we will head towards Isona. Shortly after passing through the small village of Bóixols, we will begin our ascent along a dirt track that will take us through different areas of the Serra de Boumort, eventually reaching the higher elevations near the mountain refuge.
During the ascent, we will already have excellent opportunities to observe some remarkable bird species, including Cinereous Vulture, Peregrine Falcon, Bearded Vulture, Golden Eagle, Red-billed Chough and Rock Bunting, along with many other smaller birds. We will also keep a close eye out for Red Deer, which may appear along the way.
We will stop at one of the most strategic viewpoints in the area, where we will have the opportunity to capture spectacular photographs of the Bearded Vulture. These magnificent birds often fly remarkably close to this location, sometimes even at eye level, providing unforgettable birdwatching and photography opportunities.
We will enjoy our packed lunch in the shade near the mountain refuge while continuing to observe other interesting birds of the area, such as Red Crossbill and Goldcrest.
In the afternoon, we will gradually make our way back down to the lower elevations, exploring the surroundings of Font de la Menta, where we will search for woodpeckers, tits and other characteristic woodland birds.
